Tønsberg og Omegn Ishockeyklubb

Tønsberg og Omegn Ishockeyklubb is an ice hockey club from Tønsberg, Norway, founded on 4 April 1962. The team wears red and white and plays its home games at Tønsberg Ishall. The club has spent most of its history in Norway’s top two divisions, and its elite team is sometimes called the Tønsberg Vikings. Financial trouble hit in the summer of 2016, forcing the team down a division that August, but they bounced back with promotion the next season.

For most of its early years, the club stayed in the lower tiers, never rising above the third division. In 2002, the club aimed to reach the 1. divisjon by 2006. For a long time, Tønsberg focused on youth development, but since the senior team was stuck in the 3. divisjon, talented players often left for other clubs as they got older. Canadian Dave Flanders was hired as player-coach for the 2002–03 season. The Vikings didn’t win until their third game, and a 5–6 loss to Holmen with four games left hurt their campaign. They finished sixth with 14 points from 14 games. Flanders left after that season, and his successor, Lars Oddvard Fjeldvang, later said Flanders had done well with a weak squad.

Fjeldvang took over as player-coach for 2003–04 and had better luck thanks to a stronger roster. The team went 11–2–2 for 24 points, finishing first and earning a historic promotion to the 1. divisjon in 2004–05. That off-season, the club set up a limited company to handle commercial matters and improve finances. Morten Sandø, who had played for the team since 2002, became player-coach and later head of marketing. Three experienced players were added for the 1. divisjon debut, but by mid-season half the squad was out due to injury, transfer, or other reasons, so the club had to call up junior players. The senior team finished fifth, but the junior team suffered.

In the following years, the Vikings struggled near the bottom of the standings. Even after moving up to the second tier, the club kept losing its best young players. Without a regional hockey academy, national youth players from Tønsberg still moved to Bærum or Oslo for high school. From 2006 to 2008, the club couldn’t field a separate junior team due to a lack of eligible players. In his second and final season as head coach, Sandø also criticized the team’s poor training culture. He handed over to Jimmy Svensson for 2006–07, but Svensson didn’t make much differen
